Not to much grand or exciting really, although I did create an Etsy store this week, once I get it all up an running there will be enclosed a link.

Im going to be starting a commission shortly, well actually a couple of them, one is for a coworker, kind of a farm thing, and another is for an old friend, Ill have a sketch for that one next time. But one of the things im going to do in hers is lots of strange designs and patterns in a forestly swampish scene (I probably shouldnt make up words though, so it will be somewhat of a taiga type of scene).

I was wondering however to anyone out there, should I include a background in this? I wasnt sure if it needed one, maybe just some light suggestions in the background nothing to distracting.

So I very recently started doing cover work for a podcast called The Drabblecast, and if you click on the link there it will take you to the short story that has my work as a cover. Im looking forward to doing more work for them in the future, and if you like science fiction, horror, or comedy about either, subscribe to it theres alot of strange stories by strange people.

This also made me realize that I should get more references of 60's type women.

Do you ever watch a film that you absolutely loved as a kid and realize that its not really that great by your standards today? Well I recently made a few acquisitions into my extensive film collection that I more or less just stumbled on, We're Back a film about dinosaurs coming to the present with high IQ's and The Neverending story III. Now ive never seen the Neverending story III before, ive seen the other two. Now while the dinosaur film was still pretty decent im hoping that the third installment of the series wont be a flawed as the first film. When I was little I remember vividly watching the Neverending story and remebering it having a great story and compelling characters. But watching it as an adult, you catch all those little flaws that you wish you didnt, like seeing him feeding sugar cubes to keep the horse interested, or how ridiculous the Nothing looks when it had been creepy as a kid.

Its the saddest thing about growing up, that you lose that sense of wonder about everything, yeah sure there alot of things that are still amazing, and I feel that I have a much more imaginative and creative mind than most adults. But its still those little things about being younger that you can never get back...

New Internet

So i recently got usable internet at my house, up until now I had been using a satellite provider which limited my usage per day and basically was horrible. The only time I could upload stuff online was at 3 am, but now I can do it whenever so I will hopefully be able to post things more regularly.

Life has been alright lately, work has been growing more and more frustrating, but I think that may be partially because of the slowness of the summer season, seems to put many of my coworkers in unpleasant moods, but I digress. I've been hoping to kind of work less, not alot but alittle bit less so basically less then 40+hrs a week, primarily because I feel that being away from the aggravation that is being caused by some of the issues at work will help me be happier in general, but also to get more work done, and because i feel some of the reason for my hand hurting so much is due to carrying plates (I think I should locate my wrist brace).

This one is from a while ago, but I haven't posted it up here, kind of a funny story which involves the moose one below, the moose one was a commission and in the emails, she sent saying she wanted a mouse in the image, so i sketched out the above, and she asked if i could add in a moose cause that was what she had asked for. kinda funny I suppose.

So normally I never enter into contests for bands or things like that, where they ask you as an artist to put tons of time into something that they might not like. I think its moderately disrespectful, I mean if I owned a venue and wanted a band to play at it I wouldnt ask interested parties to compose a song for it, I would listen what they already have done, I digress. I did this for a Murder by Death album art contest, but I guess they didnt like it. Not really sure what to do with it really.
So I was also geeked, due to the new internet, I was able to watch the first episode of the new Torchwood. I have high hopes, they already made several references to the BBC series which were great, but I appreciate that while it Im sure will be slightly different in execution(no pun intended to those who watched), it does seem like it will have some of the same flare, and wont be utterly destroyed like what they've done to Being Human.

Other than that life is fairly normal I suppose, the growing lack of people in Middleville is perplexing however, now its just me and Dwain, and i rarely see him due to his significant schedule. Ive been considering moving, but I dont know where Id really want to go...

I do also need to try to get some more art jobs, possibly with a publisher or something along those lines

If you havent seen already from the tons of posts about it on facebook, Cherry the independent film that I was fortunate enough to be able to the art for is going to be at Celebration Rivertown this next week. Ill be heading to the 730 showing, and then downtown for the after party at Crush. Should be a good time come and check it out.

So starting today Cherry will begin its run at Celebration Cinema's here in Michigan, Its going to start at Crossroads in kalamazoo, and then next week the 15th, itll be at Rivertown.

Im rather excited.

Sorry i havent written in a while, things have been crazy with movie gallery going bankrupt and finding a new job, now i have a new job, and its pretty stellar, my coworkers and good and I get to wear alot of black.

If you havent already you should also check out Cherry on facebook and like it, the more people who are interested in the film the better it can get out there.

Saugatuck Waterfront film festival

So kinda bummed that ill need to find a new part time job, Movie Gallery's entire corporation is going out of business. Sad but i suppose it might be nice to find something else, maybe work at a bank or something like that.

I am however rather excited, this weekend Cherry will be shown at the Saugatuck waterfront film festival, im hoping to meet some new contacts and that type of stuff. It will be neat to see peoples reactions.

Lately ive been enjoying doing these crazy pen an ink stuff in my sketchbook, plus then i dont get stressed if i have to leave to go to work or something like that. I was thinking of having some sort of story involing the eyeguy, like he would a storyteller type guy.

Merry Zombie Appreciation Month

Ah an a merry Holiday to all. For those of you out there who dont know of my made up holiday, during this most miserable of months, when relationships end, the weather becomes the more crappy part of winter with wind and ice (although today was actually rather lovely weatherwise) and radio stations periodically play "Everybody Hurts" by REM I, in stead of celebrating Valentines day (which I never really enjoyed, except the giving each other cards thing in elementary school, and the Illustration studio) celebration zombie movie appreciation month, during which I watch a zombie or horror film everyday of the month. This is partially becuase i enjoy zombie films, and partially becuase I think that instead of focusing on something that makes you miserable (a month of shattered relationships and bad weather), focus on something that gives you hope. Which might seem an odd thing to say when talking about zombie movies, but thats what those type of films are really about. Sure there is a fair share of over the top makeup and special effects, but these movies give the thought that "hey I could totally survive a zombie uprising", that and there is usually a rag-tag band of heroes, who despite all odds survive till the end.

Well after that rambling rant, which really are the best kind anyway, sorry i havent posted in a while. Things have had me a little scatter brained a bit. I have been doing some pretty awesome stuff, I recently finished working on a pretty cool movie doing some paintings for it, I might post some shortly, but i wanted to ask the director if that was alright first.

Ive been doing my own work as well, to some extent anyways, Ive been finding it sometimes hard to be motivated without all the wonderful resources that school has, and living near the city. If i need a new brush I now have to hold out until i really cant stand the one im on since its a bit of a drive into GR, and since if I drive out for a new 5 dollar brush, i might as well buy 40 dollars of paper while im there, then i usually meet up for lunch with someone; it really turns into an all day affair.

While still not all it could be, living out in Middleville has become more bearable, Ive really been enjoying my job, all my coworkers are cool, and i feel like customers are regarding me more as someone who is knowledgeable about movies then the new guy so thats nice.

I kinda painted this one a little while kinda more as a study to mess around with houndstooth but ive been trying to think of a cool way to work it into a series, maybe a life cycle type thing, or just alot of really green stuff.

Their has been alot of cool movies coming out recently, and one i would suggest would be Splinterheads, it was pleasant and was about geocaching, which i think I might really like doing and have already made plans with a few friends to have some fun with it once the weather is alittle more hiking friendly.

The other one was one that ive been waiting for for several years now, which I decided would be the first film of zombie movie appreciation month, and was happy to find that it did have some zombies. Its called Trick R Treat, Ive been waiting to see it ever since i first saw the trailer for it on the 300 dvd. Happily it was everything that I had hoped it would be, with quite a few surprises, actors I wasnt expected and was happy to see.

Well I hope all is well out in the world, and Ill try to not have 4 months in between my posts in the future

Dissapointing Fruit Loops

This is an odd concept ive been thinking about for a video game, slightly art nouveau robots
This Wax frog is already for sale at Plainwell Flowers, in both prints and the Original, the other with the plaid frogs and the lily should be heading down there sometime this week schedule permiting.

So yeah, the other day I purchased one of those spartan brand bags of cereal, it tastes basically the same and its so much cheaper. I decided to go with fruit loops, a childhood favorite of mine I like to isolate the different colors in the bowl and like eat all the greens first or what have you. Well they have apparently started putting marshmallows in with the fruit loops, which would seem like a good thing but its not, its somewhat dissapointing, and it makes the milk taste kinda weird. With this dissappointment i started to question the entire idea of the spartan bags of cereal. What does a snowboarding kangaroo have to do with fruit loops, if your trying to create a pleasant cartoon character to advertise your cereal why choose a marsupial that doesnt really seem to have anything to do with the cereal especially being a Michigan based company, we have cool animals to choose from. Toucan sam makes sense, ever in some twisted way Smacks the frog made sense, kangaroos snowboarding.

That wasnt really relative to anything I suppose, i just enjoy cereal from time to time.

Fall really is a great time, its kinda cold but not that biting wind stuff that seems to happen, its jacket weather, but no one starts hassling me for wearing shorts. And there's an over abundance of pumpkin flavored things everywhere, i love pumpkin stuff. Considering that the only kids that will come to my door are my nieces and nephews is it ok for me to make pumpkin muffins for halloween? maybe ill get a small assortment as well, just in case. Halloween is such a great holiday, its the only time that its acceptable for adults everywhere to wear capes, and all manner of strange clothes. You can become anyone you want to be, someone else for an evening or a few evenings depending on how many parties people have.

I started enjoying Ian Dury and the Blockheads again, classic. Speaking of classic I kinda want to go and see Night of The Living Dead the 1968 Romero film at the Woodland theater in a few weeks here.

Its almost Halloween

So I went on a drive earlier out to the local Speedway to get some caffeinated beverages and i realized yet again why this town still doesnt feel like home. I had been thinking that missing Allendale was mostly tied to my studio, since it has been my only real home for the last few years. But I think that perhaps it wasnt just my studio. I miss being able to walk across the street to get caffeine, granted i could never really understand what Sam was saying when i would go in there, but he always was happy to see me and if i went in with an attractive girl he would emphasize the good in "have a good night" as he slipped a few prophylactics into my bag. And pretty much every time I would go into the Allendale Speedway there was always someone i knew in there to talk with. Once when i was working on Christmas the kind guy who runs China One opened up just to make me some chicken, since i was working on Christmas. So I realize that all of those people, the Jimmy Johns folks, except for Ellie that is, Speedway, Calder, even the grocery store, they all accepted me for the strange and peculiar person that I am. Here in Middleville, i know people, but I fell like im being judged for my eccentricities. Tonight for example when i went into the Speedway wearing some hawaiian shorts, skeleton hoodie and puffy vest to purchase some caffeine and a bag of pretzels, I felt that the third shift woman looked at me like I was stoned. I realize that this isnt my town anymore, it hasnt been for some time, not since that night summers back when I had a late night conversation in her driveway, when we talked and stared up at the stars. That house isnt even there anymore.

On an entirely unrelated note, yesterday Christopher and I went to see Pandorum, the new science fiction film starring Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster. Superb, It was everything I had hoped for and more. For anyone who hasnt seen my vast movie library, I happen to enjoy movies, I especially love science fiction and horror films. But not so many of the so called horror films that have become popular within the last few years, the ones where its really more about the fact that its gory then that its scary or suspenseful, sure they always have that nail biting scene where the buxom secondary character is running through the woods, while the killer cally walks through the trees after her, yet somehow catches her, probably because of the 5 seconds when she tripped and hurt her ankle. These films are usually predictable and rely on the amount of blood and guts to carry the film. This film, was a spectacular marriage of both science fiction and horror, several points in the movie I jumped rather high as things jumped out. The ending was completely unexpected, the whole story itself didnt really have any moments of predictablity, except the little kid, never trust a creepy little kid. All in all though i suggest seeing it.

I also suggest checking out The Big Bang Theory, which I purchased recently, I laughed so hard I gave myself a headache.

While i cant really show any of the drawings, cause that would be telling, i figured id put up this single cherry as a promo for the upcoming film Cherry, which ive been doing alot of work for over the past month or so.

One of the first studies i did to get back painting after my arm was well enough

The drawings that are on cardboard all all from a group of colored pencil drawings that i did when i still only had the one arm, my surgery and all that. Still i dont mind them to much.

Its been quite awhile so i should probably elaborate on what ive been doing, for those who are curious. After my BFA gallery show (from my previous post, of which there are still several pieces for sale) I had shoulder surgery on the following Tuesday, during the next week while somewhat conscious because of the pain pills my boss Ellie Smith of Jimmy Johns in allendale fired me, because i went to my get shoulder surgery instead of working the shift that she added to my schedule despite me telling her i couldnt work it, apparently she finally found that excuse to fire me, i knew you didnt like me, but geez lady (in a performance report she marked me down because i helped make a positive working environment). Over the next month or so i was basically confined to my parents basement because i was still quite loopy and couldnt really do much except be sedentary. It was a rather trying time since it seemed to be taking so long for me to be able to once again be able to draw which on top of having to deal with my mother, who i could tell was kind of feed up with having me around and not able to do anything, caused a great deal of anxiety. I kept questioning as to if I would be able to draw as well once i was recuperated. Eventually I was able to move up to the cottage after i bought a new spectacular bed, and didnt have to sleep in a ruddy arm chair. That was around the time that i was able to start working on the colored pencil drawings above, which was alot more fun than i remebered colored pencil being, i see what Tim enjoys about it.

Socially i started being able to see people again now that i was in my own residence, and it was really great to be able to see my friends, even if i couldnt really go anywhere. I did a month or more of Physical Therapy here in Middleville, which was nice, made some new friends and started being able to feel like myself again. Also started being able to drive again and do stuff, went down to Kalamazoo from time to time with the guys to a piano bar called The Union, which was an enjoying bar. Ive also gotten to attend quite a few weddings this summer, Cary Middlebush's wedding was wonderful (although im ashamed to say ive still been to shy to call a lovely girl that i met there) And then Kenny's wedding on the 15th, it was great to see all those familiar faces, and i kinda thought that if Kenny smiled any bigger he might have hurt his cheeks. Renee also got married which was an awesome wedding as well, it was also good to hang out with all the Wayland cross girls again, a few i dont think ive really seen since high school.

So i suppose thats the synopsis of my summer as to current, my movie collection has also increased greatly which i suppose is good for the sanity but not for the checkbook. Hopefully all of you out there have had great summers full of mystery, intrigue (sorry ive been watching alot of Dr. Who) and lets not forget Moosephants.

Also ive you would like to watch something spectacular, check out Torchwood, Children of Earth, the BBC miniseries, it really makes you think about how humanity can be if pushed far enough.

These last weeks or so have been kinda trying getting all the stuff done for the show, the stress of going out into the world, along with realizations, plus the even more daunting weight of my inevitable surgery which doesnt really sound all to pleasant, and if it wasnt for all my friends wanting to come and hang out with me at my sweet cottage (the carpet is really nice) the thought of not being able to draw the way i want to for a few months would be rather depressing indeed. On the plus side ill be able to catch up on some movies and reading (just like the song says) and ill probably have to teach myself to draw better with my left hand, since i doubt that ill really be able to stay sane without drawing anything.

maybe gils right and i should throw it in the lake...

I was also thinking of perhaps, with the help of my dad since ill only have one arm, planning on constructing a large zen garden in my backyard, probably with pebbles since it can get windy from time to time.

So I was told that i should do a post that has a process thing, but i don't want to give away to much of the stuff for my show, so heres a process thing with a cover illustration that I, despite my better judgement, took a break from my show for a week to do, but it should be ok once i get some sleep. This first one is the preliminary sketch that was the original idea

And this is what it ended up being. So after a weekend of minimal sleep (even for me) its done and I can go back to working on my show and not sleeping for the rest of the

week.... awesome.

Its been busy lately getting stuff ready for the show and my new summer residence, which will be amazing. The carpet in there is so nice i almost don't even want a bed. Its going to be nice to be in Middleville again, probably a little weird at the same time though. On the plus side i can have bonfires and there wont be strange security guys who think my houseplants must be weed, cause why would a college student have houseplants right.

Its been a rough month really, alot of ups and downs it seems, even more so then basically this entire year, but maybe things will turn out alright who know. The magical magic eight ball is quite optimistic about a great many things it seems, and it was was blessed by a gypsy so you have to trust it.

I will be putting up another post with some thumbnails of stuff for the show so check it out, and maybe an image of our postcard.

Some bad stuff happened in the social life, of which im really sad about, and i doubt it will ever be better, but the consoling words of my friends are helpful. on the plus side my fortune cookie told me to think about it because ill feel better, "focus on the color yellow tomorrow for good luck"

the first updates of my show, im kinda a bit behind, but now that i have some of my photos taken i can really kick it into gear
the very beautiful Golden princess, the love interest of one of the stories oh and thats right shes a robot (there will be more butterflies and a castle)
i decided i didnt want to draw horses cause thats lame, and lets face it i dont really like drawing horses, so instead of horsemen, its going to be a guy on a salamander and a guy on a white mouse, why because i do what i want. and perhaps someone besides Sigrid gets the hidden thing ill be adding to these two compostions when they are up at the show.

Other stuff has been ok, confusing and all, but hey life is isnt it. a goat died a while ago, a good goat to.... he will be missed.

Not really finished drawing from my sketchbook, anyways things are getting along slowly, Im not where I want to be with my stuff for my show, but I think its mostly I need to spend less time not at calder, so in other words i need to get up earlier and stay here later, probably good desicions, maybe start buying groceries to have here to.

Also, apparently not that many people have heard about this yet, but im excited because well basically its a movie being produced by two amazing people Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (director of Nochnoy Dozor, and Wanted) and directed by Shane Acker, who is a fairly young guy not to far out of college who has done some stuff with Weta. A new Year

So its been a while since my last post, ill try to not let it be so long next time. Im planning on trying to have updated news on how my show is going throughout the semester.

Had a pretty amazing new years, a pretty great start to the year I'd say. the rest of the holidays were good got a shirt that is a map of Michigan which is pretty stellar. And we got the pizza boys back together in the same place which was also pretty great. so yeah things are going pretty well, now to just get a crack at the feeling of forboding from the show

Also i dislocated my shoulder on December 9, part of the reason there isnt more stuff up, but anyways i found out that i can probably wait until after the show for surgery, since it is about the sixth dislocation they said ill need it. So ill just be all drugged up for Graduation.

This is a character that I made up for a story that I've been trying to think up

Been trying to think up work out some compostions, for possible paintings for my senior show, some russian kind of forest scenes, and what would it be without a squid tree.

Things are going pretty good, was a little hectic there for a bit with the stuff for the film I was working on, pretty awesome knowing that my work will be appearing in a film that will be coming out in theathers and all that jazz, oh and I'm and extra in a couple of scenes, so thats pretty cool to. Its nice to be done with it though, less stress now i just have stress of school. Although my personal life isnt to stressful as of late, I in fact think that things are going pretty well... but anyways, how all is well for everyone out there, and if you havent heard of them yet, i strongly suggest checking out Tunng, the good arrows album, pretty weird but pretty nice all the same.

So sadly I don't think Ill be able to be Hellboy for halloween, couldn't figure out anything to use as the hand. I thought that a Hockey glove would be the best but I couldn't find anything within my price range, I think I could go as Ace Ventura maybe, or a skeleton, that would be a good time. If anyone has any ideas, granted its short notice, I would love to hear them

Been kind of a weird week, confusing, sleepless. But I think its going to be alright, and maybe things will even go the way that Id like them to, heres hoping.

Hope everyones holiday goes well, I think that mine will, going to a costume party downtown with a pretty stellar lady, might even see my little sister, Chaney late in the evening.

So stuffs been going pretty good I think, bills are no fun but they never are, it seems like whenever i pay one i get another one in the mail; but thats the way alot of things go, like keeping my kitchen clean.

Anyways i got a new job working on a film in Kzoo, so I will probably get to get down there more then I have in a while, see Alex and those guys. This is a rhinorilla robot, i think i might use him for some business cards. well back to painting it is have a beautiful afternoon.

Just a sketchbook piece that i kinda liked. So the show went awesome, we raised over 1,ooo dollars. Things are going alright in life around allendale, should probably get a new part time job, JJs is not really a great time, then again i should also probably be out enjoying my last year of college alittle bit more then I am.

I thought of an interesting quote a while back becuase of a situation I seem to be in alot, "on the road of life sometimes your the truck and sometimes your the possum" kinda bleak I suppose but honestly often is. its kinda like at JRob in high school i remeber seeing that a quote tacked on the wall in the dorm that we stayed at in Minnisota, something about how the gazelle wakes up each day making the decision to run and the lion wakes up and decides to hunt the gazelle, Im sure i made rubbish of it but it was something along those lines. both these quotes just make me think that you more or less have to decides what your going to be that day, are you going to get tread on? or are you going to let things get in your way?

These are a selection of the pieces that i will be including in the World Vision benefit show that I am involved with. Their are several other wonderful people who will also be in the show, who i believe all have a blog in my art friends section to the right if youd like to check out some of their stuff. All pieces will start at 15 or 20 dollars and there will be bidding all next week, the proceeds will all be donated to the World Vision benefit which helps people around the world by helping with a variety of things including food, shelter and medical supplies.

The show will be put up in the Padnos gallery in the Calder art center tomorrow afternoon, and the reception for the show will be next week thursday the 18th from 5 to 7, there will be great food, awesome art and even awesomer people.

Trying to figure out what im doing for my senior show, im thinking of a doing a collection of Russian fairy tales, like Baba Yaga, and Finist the bright falcon. anyways been doing lots of little yupo stuff i think I might also make a print book for my show, and have the original prints, and then books of the digital prints.

went back to working at the zoo becuase i couldnt find another job, but its not so bad; signifigantly less drama so far then when i worked there before. but then again i dont think there could have been as much as there was that summer. Allendale is kinda boring in the summers when there are no classes to take

Had a pleasant weekend, kayaking with danielle, Ryan, josh, jake and rachel. was a pretty good time, nice little dam/waterfall type thing was a good time and some good quick points. Been doing some freelance stuff and t-shirts, but i have a job interview tommorow so hopefully that goes well. Hello, sorry that i havent posted anything in a while, its the busy time of the semester. John if you read this I havent forgotten you.

Soon I will have a digital image of the painting that has consumed the better part of this semester, the one that that sketch a bit lower down is for, the one that says its for a drawing installation. Well its the central piece of my installation, and there (hopefully) will be digital prints for the show that it will exhibited at this friday the 18th of April.

If your interested in coming it will at 333 division, the corner of divison and goodrich (just down past the goodwill there) from 6pm to 11pm. I will, again hopefully, be selling prints at the show and will take orders if I run out.

Yupo print, ive been doing these fish the last few days because ive been getting really tired of painting my large watercolor, which will be up when ever it is up im planning on haveing it made into prints for the advanced drawing show during avenue of the arts downtown.

So me and Jroody when we were getting stuff framed for society found these sweet water soluble pencils, which is what that is an image of, they work beautifully. Finished building my giant duck sculpture, but am not quite done painting it, hope to get that going this afternoon, once he is done maybe ill throw a pic of him up here. I've got an idea to build all my furniture for next year over the summer out of recycled materials, like a water bottle coffee table, and door tables. Milk crates will also as always in my apartments be a large theme, thank you Dave. Well I hope that everyone had a lovely Easter, I was painting, but my mom told me the food was good.

So ill leave you with my closing thought, why in horror movies with some type of creature do they always format the film the same way. With some ill advised teens going off to some strange secluded scary spot to make-out(first off all why are you going to scary places to make-out) and then some type of dark thing drags them off, and you dont really find out what is really is until like an hour in and then your like well I guess thats what a giant hamster that was sealed in a radioactive containment bunker for the last 30 years would look like. its always kind of a let down.

So this piece and the one on an earlier post(the otter walking into a doorway held open by a hedgehog) have been accepted into the Society of Illustrators competition in New York. Out of 5863 entries 130 were selected and two of those were mine, so needless to say I am fairly excited.

I also bought new hawaiian shorts, which is also pretty exciting. they are brown and blue. anyways have a wonderful evening

The top one is the general card, while the zombie one will be for those of my friends who look forward to Valentines as a zombie movie marathon kinda day.
